MOVE TO MASS CUSTOMIZATION COULD CHALLENGE PACKAGE DEVELOPMENT

There is change afoot, but it is not always found in likely places. Call it the move to mass customization, or simply the shifting needs of the consumer marketplace. But make no mistake – the packaging industry will be affected in 2012.
 
First, consider the rise in online shopping, especially for personal care, electronics, and other durable goods. Development firm Shikatani Lacroix estimated U.S. e-commerce sales at $145bn last year. And according to president Jean-Pierre Lacroix, this shift to Internet shopping will mean a major packaging emphasis on protection, making the brand name stand out, and offering clear use instructions...
