How can the Sustainable Packaging Coalition's "de facto" definition of sustainable packaging be used as a viable framework in ideation and development, while preserving other elements critical to a successful package?

Title: Sustainable Packaging Coalition's Definition

I use the definition to guide my decision making. It's better than nothing. It fails to give absolute answers but it makes me feel confident / able to defend my general position. In a similar vein, we now need to evaluate the sustainability pro's and cons of the major packaging materials (glass, paper, metal, plastic, compostable).
