They want to be engaged. They want honesty. And, above all, they want their packaging to make a difference in their lives and in the livelihood of the planet.
They are the Millenial generation, an often-discussed, sometimes-derided segment of the consumer market that will only grow in influence as Baby Boomers retire and Gen-Xers become less involved. At the 2012 Spring Meeting of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC), held April 23-25 in Toronto, a 21-year-old spokesperson for the Millenials became one of the most talked-about speakers at the event.
Erin Schrode is co-founder of Teens Turning Green, a global group of Millenials (those born after 1980) focused on environmentalism. Her energetic, forceful speech made no bones about what this generation expects from its packaging.
