We’re not quite certain what to make of the fiscal-year 2011 earnings reports from top packaging companies in the U.S. and Canada. To mangle the old adage, it looks a bit like “two steps forward, one step back.”
In our Annual Performance Review of top publicly held companies in the United States and Canada (we added Canadian paper packaging maker
Cascades to our list this year), we noticed some extremely positive trends. Most every converter topped its sales volumes from a year ago, many showing double-digit growth. Many also were up in profitability, especially compared to the down year of 2010.
Yet, there still remained a few troubling areas as converters assessed...
