Is extended producer responsibility (EPR) becoming a necessity whose time has come or a quixotic quest that is challenging to implement? That question surrounds EPR concepts in the United States, even as the pressure increases to make it a mandated part of our packaging lives.
The issue has surfaced for quite a while. For those who aren’t aware of EPR, it is a policy of shifting responsibility for collecting and recycling packaging to the producer instead of the municipality. The brand owner (and, in consequence, the converter, and supplier) would bear the financial responsibility to provide programs that ultimately reclaim the packaging material that they originally create.
