MoreSeafood processor High Liner Foods Inc. is making a splash by switching to cartons that have with a mineral-based coating for all its product currently packaged in solid bleached sulfite (SBS) cartons. The switch to more sustainable packaging is part of the company’s goal of achieving 100% sustainability in its products by the end of 2013.
EarthCoating is made of calcium carbonate and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). According to SmartPlanet Technologies, the developer of EarthCoating, the coating uses 60% less plastic than virgin LDPE.
Prior to the switch, High Liner used a 100% LDPE coating on the inside of its cartons, with an annual carton use of 26mn cartons. The company still uses a recyclable, aqueous gloss, polymer-based coating on the cartons’ exterior. High Liner uses 16-pt and 18-pt SBS board converted by Cenveo Inc. to package more than 300 SKUs of frozen seafood for its Fisher Boy and Sea Cuisine brands in addition to a variety of private-label retail brands.
